Speed limits in Sweden

There are standard speed limits in Sweden (unless otherwise stated by traffic signs):

Speed limits for motorcycles and passenger cars (up to 3t):
in populated areas 50 km/h
outside populated areas 70 km/h
on a highway 110 km/h

Speed limits for passenger cars & vans with trailers, buses and heavy goods vehicles
in populated areas 50 km/h
outside populated areas 70 km/h
on a highway 80 km/h

Speed limits depends not on the type of the road, but depends on the quality and safety of the road. The speed limit can be changed sequentially when driving on different sections of the one and the same road. Therefore it is recommended to pay special attention to the road signs.

There are 8 new road sections in Sweden, where the maximum allowed speed of driving is 120 km/h:
  • E4 Norr Uppsala - Mehedeby (distance - 65 km)
  • E4 Norr Gränna - Linköping (distance - 85 km)
  • E4 Strömsnäsbruk - söder Örkelljunga (distance - 40 km)
  • E6 Båstad - Heberg, переменная скорость (distance - 54 km)
  • E6 Heberg - Söder Värö-Backa (distance - 103 km)
  • E18 Väster Enköping (distance - 29 km)
  • E20 Väster Mariefred - Eskilstuna (distance - 44 km)
  • If you are not sure about speed limitation on the road you are driving on, and there are no signs about the speed limit, it is recommended to drive at a speed of 70 km/h as long as you see the relevant road sign.
