Updated Rates for 2026
As of January 1, 2026, toll prices on major motorways have been adjusted by an average of **2.3%**. Below are estimated prices for a light vehicle (Class 1) on the most popular routes:

How to Pay (The Two Systems)
In Portugal, you will encounter two types of highways, which often confuse tourists:
1. Traditional Highways (With Barriers)
At these toll plazas, you take a ticket upon entry and pay at the exit. Cash and debit/credit cards are accepted.

2. Electronic Highways (Electronic Tolls / SCUT)
These roads have no physical booths. They are marked with signs saying "Electronic toll only". Cameras capture your license plate automatically as you drive under the gantries.
Best Solutions for Foreign Registered Vehicles
If you are entering Portugal with a foreign car, you have three primary options:
- EASYToll: The simplest method. Link your bank card (Visa/Mastercard) to your license plate at the "Welcome Points" (automated kiosks) found at the border. It is valid for 30 days.
- TollCard: A prepaid card (available in €5, €10, €20, or €40) activated via SMS. You can purchase these online or at CTT (Post Office) branches.
- Via Verde Visitors: A small rental device that sticks to your windshield. It allows you to use the fast lanes on all highways without stopping and automatically charges your card.
Rental Car Tip: Most car rental agencies in Portugal offer the Via Verde device for a small daily fee (approx. €1.85/day). We strongly recommend renting it to avoid the hassle of managing payments later.
Fines and Post-Payment
If you accidentally pass through an electronic highway without a registration, you have a short window (usually between 2 to 15 business days) to pay the toll at a CTT Post Office or a "Payshop" location. If left unpaid, fines are significantly higher and will be mailed to the vehicle owner's home address.
