Speed limits in Finland

Standard speed limits in Finland (unless otherwise displayed by traffic signs) are:
in populated areas 50 km/h
outside populated areas 80 km/h
on a highway 120 km/h

Speed limits for passenger cars & vans with trailers, buses and heavy goods vehicles
in populated areas 50 km/h
outside populated areas 80 km/h
on a highway 80 km/h

During the winter months, from October to March, the speed limit may be reduced compared to weather conditions.

All traffic offences are registered in Finland. There is a lot of speed cameras. Always there is a warning sign before each camera placed on the road.

If the driver receives three fines for traffic offences within one year or four fines within two years, the driver will be disqualified from driving in Finland.

If you exceed the speed limit with up to 20 km/h, the fine is about 100-115 euros.

But for more serious speeding offences and for other traffic offences the fine is determined according to the driver’s income and in some cases the police officer can confiscate the driver’s licence immediately. It means you will not be able drive a vehicle in Finland.
