Toll rates and taxes in Sweden 2026 Sweden

Last update: January 2026

Planning a road trip to Sweden in 2026? The great news is that most highways in the country are completely free for passenger cars. Unlike many European neighbors, Sweden does not use a vignette system. However, specific charges apply for crossing certain bridges and entering major cities during peak hours.

Here is everything you need to know to budget your trip and avoid heavy fines.

Congestion Taxes (Stockholm & Gothenburg)

Congestion taxes are applied in the two largest cities to manage traffic flow.
The system uses high-tech cameras to scan your license plate automatically.
When it applies: Monday to Friday, between 06:00 and 18:29.
When it’s free: Weekends, public holidays, the day before a public holiday, and usually throughout the month of July.

Stockholm (Seasonal Pricing): High Season** (March 1 – Midsummer; Aug 15 – Nov 30): Max daily cap of 135 SEK.
Low Season** (All other times): Max daily cap of 105 SEK.
Single passage rates range from 11 SEK to 45 SEK depending on the time of day.

Gothenburg: A flat seasonal structure with a maximum daily cap of 60 SEK.

Infrastructure Charges (Bridges)
In Sweden, you pay for the infrastructure specifically at these locations. There are no physical toll booths; cameras do all the work.
Pro Tip: The Öresund Bridge is expensive for one-time crossings. If you plan to cross more than once, sign up for an ØresundGO subscription to get a discount of over 50% per trip!

How to Pay (No Toll Booths!)
Sweden is a nearly cashless society. You will not find toll booths on the road (except for the Öresund Bridge, which still accepts cards/cash).
1. Automatic Detection: Cameras capture your plate as you drive under a toll portal.
2. Invoicing for Foreigners: If you are driving a car with foreign (e.g., Bulgarian) plates, the Swedish Transport Agency uses a partner called EPASS24 to process payments.
3. The Best Method: Register a free account at [EPASS24.com]
(https://www.epass24.com/) before your trip. Link your credit card, and the tolls will be debited automatically. This ensures you don't miss a paper invoice in the mail, which can lead to high late fees.

Important Rules & Fines
Late Payment Penalty: If a toll invoice is not paid on time, an automatic late fee of 500 SEK (approx. €45) is applied. They are very strict about this.
Winter Tires: If your trip is between December 1 and March 31, winter tires are mandatory if there are "winter conditions" (ice, snow, or slush) on the road.
Heavy Vehicles (>12t): These vehicles must purchase an Eurovignette online before entering the country.
