Toll rates and taxes in Bulgaria 2026 Bulgaria

Last update: January 2026

Welcome to Bulgaria! As of January 1, 2026, Bulgaria has officially joined the Eurozone. While the road tax system remains mandatory for all national roads (not just motorways), all prices are now primarily listed in Euro (€).

Here is your updated guide for navigating the Bulgarian road network this year:

1. Electronic Vignettes for Light Vehicles (up to 3.5t)
All passenger cars must have a valid e-vignette. A major update for 2026 is the full integration of the one-day vignette, which became available on February 3, 2026.

2026 Price List (Fixed Exchange Rate: €1 = 1.95583 BGN): | Vignette Type | Price in Euro (€) | Price in Leva (BGN) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **One-day** (Valid for 24h) | **€4.09** | **8.00 BGN** |
| **Weekend** (Fri 12:00 – Sun 23:59) | **€5.11** | **10.00 BGN** |
| **Weekly** (7 days) | **€7.67** | **15.00 BGN** |
| **Monthly** (30 days) | **€15.34** | **30.00 BGN** |
| **Quarterly** (90 days) | **€27.61** | **54.00 BGN** |
| **Annual** | **€49.60** | **97.00 BGN** |

Note on Trailers: If you are towing a trailer or caravan and the total weight of the vehicle + trailer exceeds 3.5 tons, you must purchase an additional vignette (same category) for the trailer.

2. Tolls for Heavy Vehicles (over 3.5t)
For trucks and buses, a distance-based TOL system applies.
CO₂ Emission Component: Starting March 1, 2026, toll rates include a carbon emission component. Older, more polluting vehicles (Euro 0–IV) face significantly higher rates—up to 130% more than eco-friendly alternatives.
Payment: Use an on-board unit (OBU), a GPS tracker, or purchase a Route Pass in advance for specific trips.

3. Bridges and Ferries (Border Crossings)
Crossing the Danube River involves separate fees not covered by the vignette:
Vidin–Calafat Bridge: €6.00 for passenger cars.
Ruse–Giurgiu Bridge: €2.00 for passenger cars.
Tip: You can now pay the Ruse bridge toll online via the Customs Agency e-portal to save time.

4. How and Where to Pay?
Online: The most reliable way is via the official site [bgtoll.bg](https://www.bgtoll.bg) or the mobile app.
In-person: Self-service terminals at border crossings, gas stations, and Bulgarian Post offices.
Currency: While the Euro is the official currency, the Bulgarian Lev (BGN) remains in dual circulation for the first month of 2026. Electronic payments are processed in Euro.

Travel Tip: Double-check your license plate number! The system uses automated cameras (ANPR), and even a single character error can result in a €35 (70 BGN) compensatory charge if you are stopped by Toll Control.
